Population: Male sexual abusers
Capacity: 19 beds

Client to Staff Ratio: 4 to 1
Hours: 24 hours per day, 365 days per year

Client Profile: While youths’ backgrounds and profiles are very diverse, all youths accepted for the La-Sa-Quik program have been charged and/or adjudicated of sexual abuse offenses. They may also have been involved in other criminal activities and often have histories of drug/alcohol abuse, incorrigibility, physical aggression, and acting out at home or in the community.

It is not unusual for sexual offenders to be passive and/or have suicidal thoughts. Most have been abused themselves, and have been considered incorrigible in the public school system, although they may be very capable of learning in alternative environments.

Most also have serious problems with authority. Youths must be willing to make a commitment to work with staff in order to facilitate change.

Admission Policy: Referrals to La-Sa-Quik programs are taken by the Unit Director via a telephone call to the office. All referrals are carefully reviewed by the Unit Director to ensure that youths are applicable to the program. Completion of a packet of placement information is required. It is preferred that applicant interviews be conducted at La-Sa-Quik because of the mandated pre-placement visit requirement and, more importantly, to dispel youths’ fears about placement.

Since some referring agencies have limitations, interviews can also be conducted wherever the youth is presently placed.

Professional Staff: A team of professionals including psychologists, educational specialists, and certified sexual abuse counselors work in concert with child care staff professionals to provide individual therapy, group therapy, recreational therapy, family counseling, educational counseling, and other treatment needs.

Program: The La-Sa-Quik residential treatment unit is highly structured and utilizes approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy, reality therapy, positive discipline, and Balanced and Restorative Justice. The treatment milieu is sex offender specific. Basic child care practices include routines, limits, confrontation, and positive peer-guided interactions. The key to these practices is staff involvement and consistency in ensuring a safe and trusting environment. A treatment plan is developed for each youth to address his specific need areas, identify strengths, and set goals. The treatment plan is then reviewed with family members, referring agency and professional staff, and is also used in conjunction with the level system, which is rooted in helping the youth mature by achieving success-oriented goals. Each level addresses specific therapeutic focuses from the treatment plan. When a specified degree of consistency—cognitive, emotional and behavioral—is demonstrated by the youth, he is ready for the next level.

Both confrontation and positive peer interaction are used to bring about positive change. All staff are aware of each youth’s maturity level, the communication approach appropriate for each youth, and the youth’s achievements in the level system.

The youths are involved in a very structured schedule including formal education, sexual therapy group, family issues, social skills building, adventure-based counseling, and other topic/focus groups. Through this process, the youths are encouraged to take responsibility for reshaping their lives. In short, problems of attitude, motivation, desires, stress, anger, and frustration are dealt with through everyday events and interactions. The objective of all treatment is to build self esteem, self-awareness, self-control, social skills, work skills, logical thinking, and independent living skills, so that each youth can succeed when he leaves the program.

Our-Patient Clinic for Mental Health Needs: All Children entering the La-Sa-Quik Program are assessed by our licensed Social Worker for the initiation of the development of a comprehensive treatment plan and to identify mental health issues that may need to be addressed through our out-patient clinic in Blossburg. Psychotropic medications will be evaluated by our board certified psychiatrist through this clinic.

Education provided in an on-campus classroom staffed by certified teachers through the local school district and approved by the Department of Education. The curriculum is comprised of all educational requirements.
