Monday, April 5—Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital will host a community blood drive on Monday, April 5 in the Board Room. Tyoga Country Club has generously donated 25 free rounds of golf, to be played at the course in April, to the first 25 blood donors. The donation slots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Bring your friends, family, and significant others—all are welcome to donate as long as it has been 56 days since your last donation and you are at least 17 years of age (16 with parental consent). Monday, April 5—The “67 Women, 67 Counties: Facing Breast Cancer in Pennsylvania” traveling photo exhibit will kick off with a free opening reception, presentation, and a tour of the new digital mammography unit at 7 p.m. on April 5 in the Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital Board Room. Refreshments will be served. The exhibit celebrates the life, courage, hope, and dignity of families that have battled breast cancer. This touching tribute showcases at least one woman from each of the state’s 67 counties and encourages women to learn about early detection through yearly mammograms, monthly breast self-exams, and annual clinical exams. Exhibit will be on display at Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital (SSMH) from Monday, April 5 to Friday, April 16, 2010. To RSVP for the opening reception, please call 1-800-377-8828 extension 303. Tuesday, April 6— Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital will hold a free Expectant Parents class on Tuesday, April 6 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Hospital Conference Room. The class is titled “Physical and Emotional Changes During Pregnancy.” The class is part of a six-session course coordinated by Stacey Tom, RN, which addresses concerns of the expectant mother and father. Classes are not sequential, and participants may join at any time during the cycle. Registration is not necessary. Walk-ins are warmly welcomed. For more information, call (570) 723-0375.

Tuesday, April 13—Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital will hold a Neonatal Resuscitation course on Tuesday, April 13 in the hospital Board Room from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This course is based on the American Academy of Pediatrics and American Heart Association's international guidelines for emergency cardiovascular care of newborns. The course consists of seven lessons. Successful completion of each lesson requires a passing score on the written evaluation and successful completion of the performance checklist for each lesson. Thursday, April 15—The Look Good, Feel Better workshop will be held 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on April 15 in Meeting Room C at Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital. It is a free workshop for women in cancer treatment that teaches women with cancer how to understand and care for changes in skin and hair that may occur during treatment. Luann Goodreau, cosmetologist, will be the instructor. To register for the workshop or for more information, call the American Cancer Society at 1-888-227-5445.

Tuesday, April 20—Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital will hold a free Expectant Parents class on Tuesday, April 20, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Board Room. The class is entitled “Labor and Delivery” and will feature a tour of the obstetrics (OB) Unit. New parents will learn how to time contractions, when to come to the hospital, and much more. The group will then tour the Obstetrics unit, including Labor and Delivery, the newborn nursery, and the post partum rooms. The class is part of a cycle of classes coordinated by Stacey Tom, RN, which addresses concerns of the expectant mother and father. Classes are not sequential, and participants may join at any time during the cycle. Registration is not necessary. Walk-ins are warmly welcomed. For more information, please call (570) 723-0375.

Wednesday, April 28—A free bereavement support group meets from 10:30 a.m. to noon in Meeting Room C at the hospital. The instructor for the group meetings will be social worker Sherry Bodine, BSW.
