WELLSBORO, PA—Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer in men. The early stages often cause no symptoms and can go unnoticed. With early detection, most prostate cancer can be cured. The most effective way of detecting prostate cancer is a combination of the prostate specific antigen test (blood test) and a digital rectal exam. The prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by cells of the prostate gland. A PSA test measures the level of PSA in the blood. An annual PSA test recommended for men 50 years of age or older and men 40 to 49 years of age who are African American or have a family history of prostate cancer. The blood sample will be tested by the Clinical Laboratory at Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital.

Guard yourself against prostrate cancer by taking advantage of both exams, offered by Laurel Health System. The PSA test will be offered on Tuesday, April 6 and Tuesday, April 20 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the white Occupational Health building, 25 Walnut Street, Wellsboro.

Following the PSA test, an appointment can be scheduled with E. Lee Bellinger, MD, urologist, for a digital rectal exam on either Tuesday, May 13 or Thursday, May 18. The exam will be performed at Dr. Bellinger’s office in Wellsboro, and the results of the PSA test will be provided to each participant at that time.

No appointment is necessary for the PSA test. The cost for both exams is $21, payable at the time of the PSA test. The visit to Dr. Bellinger’s office is free of charge.
