WELLSBORO, PA--George Bernard Shaw once said, “there is no love sincerer than the love of food,” and anyone musing on his or her favorite homemade dish is likely to agree. Good food brings us more than nutrition; it brings us good memories and comfort.

Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital celebrates nutrition and the employees who provide it during National Healthcare Food Service Week, October 1st through the 6th.

All of Laurel Health’s nutrition staff receives rigorous training in food safety, sanitation, nutrition, and food service preparation. The department handles menu planning, inventory, cost management, order placement, food safety, and delivery. The staff is also responsible for creating patient meals, which means ensuring every tray is checked for foods restricted from their diet or that might interact with a patient’s medication or allergies.

National Healthcare Food Service Week was founded in 1985 in Illinois. The celebration quickly spread throughout the United States and was declared a national event in 1989. The Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital Nutrition Services department honored this year’s theme, “A Recipe for Excellence” by recognizing employees for their hard work with a series of special events.
