WELLSBORO, PA—Following training and Department of Health approval, Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital has joined Lehigh Valley Hospital’s TeleBurn program. TeleBurn allows emergency room physicians to work with the Lehigh Valley Regional Burn Center specialists 24/7 on non-life threatening burns to ensure the highest quality of burn care locally. The exchange of information also aids caregivers at the Lehigh Valley Hospital’s Regional Burn Center, Pennsylvania’s largest burn center, in preparing for any patient transfers.
SSMH staff received formal training in TeleBurn from Daniel Rymond, EMT-P, Lehigh Valley Health Network representative. TeleBurn utilizes a digital camera, computer, and web-based software to send images of burn injuries to Lehigh’s specialists for review and assessment. The burn specialists then view the images while consulting with local emergency room physicians over the phone, expediting the delivery of specialty care to patients using preset burn protocols.
Currently, forty Pennsylvania hospitals are participating in the service. TeleBurn assessments meet all applicable privacy and security regulations outlined by the Health Insurance Portability and Protection Act (HIPAA), and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act), ensuring patient privacy and security is kept confidential.
